What is the Budapest Water Summit 2019?

Building on the success of the events held in 2013 and 2016, Hungary will host the third Budapest Water Summit in 2019. Under the patronage of H.E. Mr János Áder, President of Hungary, the conference will take place on 15-17 October 2019.

 The three-day conference aims to expose the urgency of tackling the challenges of the emerging water crises (under the motto: Preventing water crises), building around the issues of abundant, scarce and polluted waters.

The ultimate aim of the BWS 2019 is to discuss the challenges in the field of governance, knowledge, finance and regulation and find solutions on how to achieve a water-secure world.

The event is intended to pursue a pragmatic, solution-oriented approach open to innovative and cost efficient technologies and methods.

Who organises the Budapest Water Summit 2019?

The Budapest Water Summit 2019 is organised by the Government of Hungary. The preparatory work is coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

When and where will the Summit take place?

The Budapest Water Summit 2019 and the Expo will be held between 15 and 17 October 2019 in Budapest, at Millenáris Park.

The Inauguration Session of the BWS 2019 will begin at 9:30 a.m. on 15 October 2019.
 We would kindly bring to your attention that the Inauguration Session is a closed event. Those of our guests who have not received a separate, personal invitation will have the opportunity to follow the closed session on large screens on the spot.

How can I register and participate in the Summit?

The organisers expect up to 2000 participants from all over the world to the Budapest Water Summit 2019. No registration fee is charged, but participation is by invitation only. Governments, UN bodies as well as other relevant internal and international organisations, international financial institutions, scientists and business associations, the civil society and the private sector will be invited to the Plenary Sessions of the Summit.  

The organisers of the Budapest Water Summit 2019 provide a link for online registration for invited participants. Participation at the Summit is only possible after the applicant receives confirmation of the registration. 

When can I register for the Summit?

The registration for invited participants is open until 30 September, 2019.

What is the programme of the Summit?

The two main events of the Budapest Water Summit 2019 are: the plenary sessions with high level speakers discussing the challenges of the emerging water crises – issues concerning the abundant, scarce and polluted water – and their social, economic, environmental and political consequences, and the Water Expo, which provides an opportunity for companies active in the water sector to present their innovative solutions.

 The topics are discussed in the framework of the ten thematic plenary Summit sessions. Each thematic session will be introduced by two keynote speeches that will be followed by moderated Davos-style discussions.

The Budapest Water Summit 2019’s Inauguration Session will take place at 9:30 am on 15 October at Millenáris Park – National Dance Thater. According to our plans, the Budapest Water Summit 2019 will close its session at 16:30 pm on 17 October.

On the margin of the Budapest Water Summit 2019, a Water Expo will be held as well. The Expo is intended to focus on sustainable, innovative, environment-friendly solutions in the field of drinking water production, water treatment and water supply.

What outcome do we expect from the Summit?

The World Summit aims to formulate concrete suggestions and recommendations that will contribute effectively and efficiently to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals, with particular reference to the water related Goal 6. Among the latter, the introduction and presentation of pragmatic, innovative, cost-effective and sustainable technologies and methods for drinking water, water treatment, water supply and water resource management can be listed, which help participating countries to address and solve water challenges.
