Sad record of a sea that deserves better

Based on a study spanning more than 20 years, researchers of the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer) believe that the Mediterranean Sea is the most polluted sea in Europe.

Scientists with the French institute conducted studies in the Gulf of Lion and along the eastern shores of Corsica between 1994 and 2017.

According to the study published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin, in the 1990s there were around 100 pieces of waste floating in the water per square kilometre, but in the 2000s, the situation got worse: by 2012, the waste density was around 200, and reached 300 in 2015. Most of the waste in the sea consists of plastic bags and bottles, food packaging, cans, fishing nets and ropes.

said Olivia Gerigny, a researcher with the institute.

The highest accumulation of waste was observed near Marseille and the northeast shores of Corsica.

What can we do against pharmaceutical residues in our waters?

After being introduced into human and animal organisms, some pharmaceutical compounds are secreted via urine unchanged, and then, through wastewater, those compounds may reach surface waters that serve as drinking water supplies, representing a risk for both aquatic ecosystems and for the purity of drinking water.
