Data from the UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme indicates that between 2011 and 2017, almost five thousand marine mammals were stranded around the shores of the UK.
Injuries caused by fishing and commercial and military ships, noise and environmental pollution all contribute to the reduction in the numbers of marine populations.
Marine biologists believe that the destruction of the animals is always caused by the consequences of human activity: one in four dolphins die because they are tangled in fishing nets.
The exponentially growing amount of plastic waste is also highly dangerous for marine species, and many other animals are killed by the chemicals discharged into the water. Among the chemical poisons, polychlorinated biphenyls, used as bielectric fluid in transformers and condensers, as hydraulic fluids in lifting machinery and for the production of paints, adhesives and insulating materials are particularly harmful.
