Nine of the ten most common types of seaside waste are related to human food and drink consumption.
During their waste collection work in 2018, members of the environmental organisation Ocean Conservancy found that after cigarette butts (of which they collected more than 5.7 million pieces) plastic food packaging is the second most common type of waste on beaches: they collected more than 3.7 million items. Plastic straws, stirrers, shopping bags, caps for cups, plastic forks, knives, spoons and plates were also high on the list.
There were some stranger things, too: almost 70 thousand toys, 16 thousand appliances, a chandelier, a plastic Christmas tree, a garage door and a cash register were also found.
More than a million volunteers took part in the waste collection efforts, and they collected a total of 10.5 million kilograms of waste on the beaches of 122 countries.

Despite the continuous development of wastewater treatment technologies, the complete removal of synthetic pharmaceuticals using the three-step method currently in use is yet to be achieved.
