80 countries may ramp up climate pledges

According to a UN statement issued on 28 May, some 80 countries wish to increase their voluntary climate pledges under the Paris Agreement. This is a much needed step, as scientists believe that even if all countries complied 100% with their 2015 pledges, it would not be enough to avert a climate crisis.

In the 2015 Paris climate accord, countries from around the world made voluntary pledges to curb global warming. However, according to current climate models, even more drastic steps are needed
to keep global warming below a maximum of two degrees, which was the aim of the accord.

“We need to step up ambition quite radically. We are not talking about a small incremental approach,”

said Luis Alfonso de Alba, the United Nations Secretary General’s envoy on climate change, although
he declined to say which countries were expected to announce higher climate ambitions.
