Liszt: The Fountains Of Villa d’Este

Impressionism in music was born with this wonderful composition of the world famous Hungarian virtuoso pianist Ferenc Liszt. The piece entitled “The Fountains of Villa D’Este” recalls the memories of his days spent in the famous mansion of the Italian noble family Este in Tivoli.

His late set of three suites for solo piano entitled “Years of Pilgrimage” evokes the cheerful sparkling of the fountain of the villa with a euphonic sound considered to be ground-breaking at the time. He wrote the following quote from John’s gospel above the notes: “Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
