Germicidal ultraviolet light kills viruses, bacteria and yeast fungi in a matter of seconds. As opposed to traditional chemical solution against which bacteria might become resistant, when UVC treatment is applied, bacteria, viruses and fungi do not develop resistance, and this treatment does not generate any toxic by-product, either.

Germicidal lamps are equipment, which transform electricity into ultraviolet radiation. Microorganisms are sensitive to a particular range of ultraviolet radiation with the most sensitive spot being near 254 nm (nanometer). UVC lamps are able to convert electric energy into 254 nm radiation, with as high as 41 % efficiency. Since UVC light penetrates through the cell wall and is absorbed by the nucleic acids, the cell’s genetic information is rearranged. This process disrupts the reproductive ability of the cells. Since the cells cannot reproduce, they die. More precisely, UVC light harms the DNA of microorganism as it forms covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases of DNA. This formation prevents the DNA from being able to reproduce. Actually, when the organism tries to reproduce, it dies.

Another great advantage is that thanks to Shatter ProTech technology, the lamps are break resistant, keep any concomitant debris within, exclude the possibility of mercury pollution, reduce human and material risks, wounds caused by glass and also damages to equipment. Germicidal lamps can be used in numerous water treatment equipment, including pools, baths and aquaculture, along life sciences and water treatment processes like waste water treatment, drinking water purification, ballast water and the operation of high purity water treatment The basic objective of the technology is to radically reduce the use of chlorine and of harmful and irritating germicidal by-products known as Downgradient Property Status, DPS (the most frequent DPSs are haloacetic acid trihalomethanes). The traditional water treatment process using chlorine might be hazardous to health and the environment, while UVC water treatment provides a safer and environmentally friendlier solution.
