Germicidal UV Water Purification

LightTech Lámpatechnológiai Kft. (LightTech Lamp Technology Ltd) offers environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions for ultraviolet (UVC) germicidal applications. Their UVC illuminants are used in various areas, among them for the sterilization of pools, water treatment of baths, fish farming. The technology also offers an excellent solution for life sciences and water treatment (e.g. waste water, drinking water purification, ballast water and water reclamation) equipment, and it also has air purification applications and surface treatment possibilities.

LightTech is one of the world leaders in quartz germicidal lamps, its products are an essential part of the equipment that help to protect water from harmful microorganisms; moreover they are even capable of disinfecting waste water.  The innovative technology of the company offers indispensable help to industrial sectors (pharmaceuticals, electro technical and bottling industries), food processing factories, hospitals and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment requiring high purity water.

UVC lamps are used at the Megyeri Plant of Budapest Water Works

The research and development team of the company is continuously developing new environmental technologies which are unique to the sanitization industry. They are committed to supplying ecologically-sound solutions worldwide in order to contribute to balancing public safety and environmental protection with the need for effective disinfection. LightTech continuously strengthens its leading position in technologies that are vital for the current and future health of the earth’s indispensable resources, such as clean water and air. UVC water treatment provides a safer and more environment friendly solution.

Germicidal ultraviolet light kills viruses, bacteria and yeast fungi in a matter of seconds. As opposed to traditional chemical solution against which bacteria might become resistant, when UVC treatment is applied, bacteria, viruses and fungi do not develop resistance, and this treatment does not generate any toxic by-product, either.

Germicidal lamps are equipment, which transform electricity into ultraviolet radiation. Microorganisms are sensitive to a particular range of ultraviolet radiation with the most sensitive spot being near 254 nm (nanometer). UVC lamps are able to convert electric energy into 254 nm radiation, with as high as 41 % efficiency. Since UVC light penetrates through the cell wall and is absorbed by the nucleic acids, the cell’s genetic information is rearranged. This process disrupts the reproductive ability of the cells. Since the cells cannot reproduce, they die. More precisely, UVC light harms the DNA of microorganism as it forms covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases of DNA. This formation prevents the DNA from being able to reproduce. Actually, when the organism tries to reproduce, it dies.

One of the strengths of LightTech is that it possesses worldwide recognised patents (pellet amalgam technology, unique ceramic balls and sockets) and technological processes, which enable it to produce high performance UVC light sources.

Patented pellet amalgam structure

Pellet amalgam technology allows for horizontal, vertical and inclined applications. The company’s proprietary LongLife+™ coating makes it possible to dramatically increase the lifespan of germicidal lamps, so they are able to operate up to 16,000 hours at 85% UVC capacity. The technology is environmental friendly and complies with Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure, i.e. TCLP standards. Another great advantage is that thanks to Shatter ProTech technology, the lamps are break resistant, keep any concomitant debris within, exclude the possibility of mercury pollution, reduce human and material risks, wounds caused by glass and also damages to equipment. The Shatter ProTech shield is heat and acid resistant, more cost-efficient than quartz sleeves and fits into any lamp geometry while at the same time offering high performance at a low cost.  Germicidal UVC technology is becoming ever more popular globally in various industrial sectors due to its inherent advantages and almost endless opportunities of its use.

Germicidal lamps can be used in numerous water treatment equipment, including pools, baths and aquaculture, along life sciences and water treatment processes like waste water treatment, drinking water purification, ballast water and the operation of high purity water treatment The basic objective of the technology is to radically reduce the use of chlorine and of harmful and irritating germicidal by-products known as Downgradient Property Status, DPS (the most frequent DPSs are haloacetic acid trihalomethanes). The traditional water treatment process using chlorine might be hazardous to health and the environment, while UVC water treatment provides a safer and environmentally friendlier solution.

Patented head and socket design

Germicidal UV technology can be used with high efficiency not only in water treatment but also for air sterilisation and to eliminate unpleasant odours, as well as to control the emission of industrial air containing Volatile organic compounds (VOC) and solvents. Germicidal UVC purifies the air eliminating harmful microorganisms causing illness and that is the reason why hospitals, for instance, make a great use of this product. They are also used, among others,  in waste water plants to eliminate unpleasant odours, in farms, commercial kitchens (in HVAC) and food processing plants, in addition to it having a great significance in industries where harmful and toxic chemical materials are produced, like printing, plastic and rubber industries.

UV lamps can be used to disinfect surfaces, too. It is of essential importance that during this process disinfection is performed without any chemicals which means a great deal in a number of industrial sectors like food processing.
