Danube Box – an educational package about and for the Danube

The Danube Box, an educational package published by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) was created as an international initiative. It assists teachers, and partly goes beyond the compulsory school curriculum to deliver additional information to students. The educational package is aimed at increasing environmental awareness in schoolchildren and bringing the natural and cultural treasures of the Danube region to their attention while also urging them to protect the assets of the Danube Basin and encouraging their sustainable use.

Rivers and wetland habitats do a great service for humanity. The Danube and its tributaries are the life-giving arteries of the Danube Basin, which we need to protect for future generations. The package contains many images, exercise sheets that may be copied, role-playing games, other games, plans for indoor and outdoor activities as well as cultural appendices (everyday stories, legends as well as recipes) along with factual and scientific knowledge. Teams from interested schools may enter a competition each year. The results of the competition in the 2015-16 academic year can be viewed here.

The Danube Box has been developed within the framework of the "Green Danube Partnership" between the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), the Coca-Cola Company and the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company.

Rivers know no political boundaries, so any human interference in the Danube Basin affects all the people living along the river’s banks. Therefore the principle of “shared and responsible management” is especially applicable: the Danube Basin has a shared past, but the awareness of future generations will decide whether it will also have a future. The Danube Box educational package provides effective assistance with achieving that objective – says the Hungarian website of the programme.
